NGO position on the new Anti-Discrimination Directive Proposal in Czech Republic drastically differs from the position of the government. Alexandra Jachanova Dolezelova from Gender Studies Center from Prague sent us an article on the proposal of new antidiscrimination directive and the position of the Czech Republic towards it which we are publishing below.
The Norwegian Parliament has voted in favor of making payment for sexual acts a criminal offence in order to protect vulnerable women and children. The law passed with 44 votes in favour and 28 against and will come into effect on January 1, 2009.
The Fifth International Conference of journalists, Gender and Media, War and Peace: Challenges and Overcoming was held in Tbilisi on Dec. 16-20. The conference adopted the Appeal to the presidents of Russia and Georgia demanding from them direct negotiations which is open for signing.
The situation of Nobel peace laureate and human rights defender Shirin Ebadi grows increasingly critical. Over the last two weeks the organization she heads, Defenders of Human Rights Center, was shut down, false accusations of tax evasion were made against her in the media, her private law offices were raided and confidential case files seized, and on January 1st a mob of 150 demonstrated in front of her house in an orchestrated attempt to connect her to the Israeli actions in Gaza.
Israeli strikes continue on Gaza throughout Saturday night and into Sunday afternoon, 279 now dead and more than 900 injured. The death toll of the attacks rose to 279, with 900 injured 180 seriously so. Activists prepare protests around the world on Monday 29 December, 4.00pm – 6.00pm.
Mutabar TADJIBAEVA, released from prison on the 2nd of June and for the first time allowed to travel abroad, will receive the 2008 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders.
