How Much Does an Office Cost at the UN
NEWWNew York - Ines Alberdi is said to have the necessary requirements to be an excellent director of the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), a post for which she was appointed on Monday, April 7. The Madrid newspaper El Pais described her as follows: "sister of the former minister of Social Affairs, Cristina Alberdi, and candidate of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in the elections of the Community of Madrid in 2003, Inés Alberdi is professor of Sociology at the Complutense University and a recognized expert with international experience on issues related to women and family. She has been a consultant to several international agencies, including the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)."

Take Action: Uzbek Human Rights Defender
NEWWMutabar Tadjibaeva has been in prison in Uzbekistan since 2006 due to her legitimate work for human rights. As an extra punishment she is being held in the psychiatric wing of the prison and denied access to medical treatment. Front Line is seriously concerned for her well-being. Priorities of the international community have shifted while tens of thousands of civilians have died, hundreds of thousands have been displaced, and access to justice and fundamental freedoms are continuously denied.

Getting More Women to the Top in Research
NEWWBrussels, 17 April 2008. The European Platform of Women Scientists organised a lunch debate on the 16th of April 2008, presenting the recently published report of the European Commission's Expert Group on Women in Research Decision Making (WIRDEM). Invited speakers were Maya Widmer, Chair of the WIRDEM Expert Group and Dr. Johannes Klumpers, Head of Unit Scientific Culture and Gender Issues, Directorate General Research. The audience included Dr. Sandra Bitusikova, member of the Expert Group, Britta Thomsen, Member of European Parliament and rapporteur on the European Parliament's own initiative report on women and science, and Agnes Hubert, member of the European Commission's Bureau of European Policy Advisers. EPWS President Dr. Adelheid Ehmke and EPWS Vice President Dr. Brigitte Muehlenbruch were also in attendance.

The IFS Research Grant
NEWWAn IFS Research Grant has a maximum value of USD 12,000. It is awarded to an individual researcher, for a specific research project, presented by the Applicant in the Application form. The IFS Research Grant is intended for the purchase of the basic tools needed to conduct the proposed research project - equipment, expendable supplies, and literature - and to arrange fieldwork activities related to the proposed project.

CIDA Conference Fund
NEWWThe CIDA Conference Fund reimburses expenses, such as registration, travel, accommodation, meals, incidentals and visa fees, incurred to bring eligible delegates to conferences, workshops, seminars and related events that support CIDA's programming priorities. Budgeting for the Future
