GENDER AND TRANSFORMATION: WOMEN IN EUROPE WORKSHOP

(with support from the Network of East-West Women)

NYU CENTER FOR EUROPEAN AND MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES

CALL FOR PAPERS SPRING 2015

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: NOVEMBER 28, 2014

The GENDER and TRANSFORMATION: WOMEN in EUROPE Workshop invites

speakers to submit proposals for Friday afternoon talks for spring

2015 at the NYU Center for European and Mediterranean Studies.

This year, 2014-2015, marks another moment of historical reflection:

25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and subsequent collapse of

state socialism and the expansion of more or less democratic

capitalism. We are looking for speakers to discuss such issues as

changes in how gender is reflected in these commemorations;

contemporary controversies about state socialist women's

organizations; gender, sexuality and culture in state socialism;

gender in contemporary political developments including in

nationalist movements; gender and sexuality including LGBT movements;

gender dimensions in current anti-Semitism or in new Jewish museums;

or gender cooperation and /or tensions among EU countries and between

EU and non-EU countries. We are interested in both theoretical and

conceptual discussions as well as empirical examinations.

Our focus is on the postcommunist countries of East, South, and

Central Europe and the former Soviet Union, including countries in or

outside of the EU, such as Albania, Ukraine, Turkey, and in Central

Asia. Recent workshop topics have included changes in Polish women's

life-writing from Solidarity to the present; gender, religion, and

resistance in East European dissident movements; Russian

intersexuality; Roma, Jewish, and German post-Holocaust memory; and

post-socialist media and women politicians in Bulgaria, Estonia, and

Romania. For a complete list of past presentation see

http://gendertransformationeurope.wordpress.com/previous-speakers/.

The workshop is an informal and friendly group of about 20 feminist

scholars, activists, and journalists who have been meeting for more

than 20 years and are knowledgeable about the region. This is the

perfect space to present recent theoretical and/or critical work,

empirical research, and critical and scholarly reflections on your

activism.

We offer a small honorarium; however, we regret that we cannot cover

transportation expenses to New York City.
