Support for a woman candidate for the position of EU President - Prof. Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga
Prof. Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga is Vice-president of the Reflection Group on the Future of the European Union 2020-2030. As the President of the Republic of Latvia she became the first woman to lead a Central and East European State towards its integration in the EU and NATO, guiding a challenging and complex diplomatic process.
The best reflection of Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga's skills lies in her work to raise the nation's recognition in the world through her mission at the United Nations (UN) and other international activities. She was named Special Envoy to the Secretary General on United Nations reform in 2005 and an official candidate for the position of UN Secretary General in 2006.
As a result of division of Europe, Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga grew up in the West and has a profound understanding for Western societies, as well as considerable insight into the issues of society and statecraft for the Member states that have joined since 2004.
Vaira Vike-Freiberga is not only highly skilled and experienced in consensus building. She is also a charismatic and powerful political thinker and a gifted multilingual orator who can unite and inspire nations across the continent to believe in European goals and ideals.
In fact, Vaira Vike-Freiberga could become the symbol of a reunited Europe, which will be celebrated next week with the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. In addition to the above arguments, by naming a woman to this high post, we will also send a strong signal at a top level in favour of equal opportunities in the EU. This is especially important considering the small number of women candidates who have been proposed for the new Commission.
Mr. Vaclav Havel (the Robert Schuman foundation, the Lithuanian President and a lot of others support the nomination already for some time) joined the support team for Prof. Vaira Vike-Freiberga. We would like to ask for your support for this nomination, by spreading out this mail, by addressing your national government, and/or by voting on one of the support web pages
