Asia Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing +15 - Registration Now Open
Next year 2010 will be the 15th year of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA). As has been the tradition, Asia-Pacific Women’s Watch (APWW) will convene the Asia-Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing + 15. It will take place on 22-24 October 2009 in Manila, Philippines. Miriam College, a private educational institution for women, will host the event. UNIFEM in New York has pledged partial financial support.
The theme is Asia-Pacific women sharing stories and weaving dreams – NGO Forum on Beijing+15. It will highlight the innovative and successful initiatives by women NGOs along the 12 critical areas of concern of the BPFA to learn lessons for replication and policy advocacy. The main purpose of APWW is to create a venue for women’s movements across the region to develop a strategy for a stronger civil society advocating the rights of vulnerable women and holding institutions accountable for their international commitments to women, including human rights treaties. APWW Chairperson Hiroko Hara explains, “Even as we broadly assess issues of implementation and monitoring of the BPFA, we will give more attention to analysing new trends such as the global economic recession and climate change and to recommending actions by governments, international organizations and civil society.” There will be a special session on the campaign for the creation of a new women’s entity at the UN as well as for meaningful civil society participation in all stages of the development and functioning of this entity.
The Asia-Pacific NGO Forum on Beijing+15 will input into the global NGO Forum, which will take place prior to the 54th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in 2010. The focus of this UN CSW session is the review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action and the outcome of the 23rd Special Session of the General Assembly.
