Beijing +10 Regional Meeting, Kiev

Promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment described by the governments does not always show the real situation of women. Various women NGO’s from CEE/NIS region dedicated their meeting held in Kiev, 11-14 November, to discussion and exchange the ideas of creating the alternative reports. NEWW-Polska represented Poland.

Women movements from Caucasus to Balkans had the opportunity to share their experiences concerning the most important issues in their countries. Most stressed were themes of trafficking, violence against women, violation of human rights and not adequate legislation in different countries. Economy and women on labour market also gather the attention. This area was underlined by United Nations as one of four of great importance. In Poland NEWW-Polska is responsible for revising the government policies and actions concerning women and economy. During the second day of the conference participants has chance to compare their views and ideas on workshops.

Day 1
Regional Perspectives in the Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action: Achievements, Gaps and Challenges

Jasna A. Petrovic, Regional Coordinator, International Confederation of Free Trade Unions CEE Women's Network (Croatia, Zagreb). Impact of globalisation on gender equality and social justice in CEE countries.

Tatiana Batushkina, BIZPRO-Moldova (Moldova, Chisinau). Women and economy in Moldova: reality and perspective.

Raisa Sinelnikova, Counterpart Alliance for Partnership (Belarus, Minsk).Assessment of opportunities for women entrepreneurs in Belarus.

Zofia Lapniewska, NEWW – Polska (Poland, Gdansk). Gender budgeting initiative in the CEE/CIS region.

Exchange of country specific experience, identification of achievements, gaps and challenges in area of women's economic empowerment and poverty eradication in the CEE/CIS region (women's entrepreneurship, access to assets, savings and credit mechanisms and institutions, gender budgeting etc.).

Women's Access to and Control of Natural Resources

Marie Haisova, Director of Agentura GAIA (Czech Republic, Praha).Women's participation in environmental decision making in Czech Republic.

Exchange of country specific experience, identification of achievements, gaps and challenges as for women's access and control of natural resources in the CEE/CIS region (women's inheritance of land, women's access to natural resources, representation of women in environmental management, women's environmental initiatives).

Women in Power and Decision Making

Tamar Sabedashvili, The STAR Network of World Learning (Georgia, Tbilisi). Women and political parties in Georgia.

Exchange of country specific experience, identification of achievements, gaps and challenges as for increasing women's participation in decision making (positive measures of government and political parties, women's experiences in advocating gender parity, etc.).

Violence against Women

Elena Mashkova, Femina (Russia). Domestic and sexual violence against women in Russia: access of victims to psychological and legal support.

Ekaterina Levchenko, La Strada (Ukraine, Kiev). Institutional mechanisms and civil society activity to prevent trafficking women in the CEE/CIS region.

Mirjana Dokmanovic, Women's Center for Democracy and Human Rights (Serbia). Development of national institutions to protect women's rights.

Exchange of country specific experience, identification of achievements, gaps and challenges as for institutional mechanisms, legislative base and role of civil society in prevention of violence against women.

Day 2

Implementation of Beijing Platform of Action in the Context of European Integration Gender Mainstreaming as a Precondition of European Integration: Experience of Accession Countries

Genoveva Tisheva, Director of Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation (Bulgaria, Sofia). Gender Mainstreaming: International, regional and national laws and enforcement mechanisms.

Laja Reet, President, The Estonian Women's Studies and Resource Center (Estonia, Tallin). Development of institutional mechanisms for gender mainstreaming in Estonia.

Dovile Rukaite, Women's Issues Information Center (Lithuania).Lithuanian experience on gender mainstreaming.

Open discussion, exchange of country specific experience on gender perspectives in the context of European integration. Institutional Processes, Mechanisms and Tools for Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in the CEE/CIS region

Work in four working groups on thematic issues discussed in the first day to analyze institutional processes, mechanisms and tools, and identify forward-looking strategies gender mainstreaming in the CEE/CIS region. Develop recommendations to national governments and international institutions to mainstream gender in the CEE/CIS region.

Editing of recommendations to national governments and international institutions to mainstream gender in the CEE/CIS region.

Discussion of the framework of regional report "NGO assessment of implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in CEE/CIS countries", and follow up activities towards 10-year Review of implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

Working languages: Ukrainian/Russian/English
Translation will be provided during the regional seminar. The report also will be translated and published in Russian and English.
